A 76-year-old nursing home resident in Minnesota has died weeks after police shot him with a taser, according to local reports.

Zheng Diao was a resident at Extendicare’s Park Health and Rehabilitation Center in St. Louis Park, MN. On July 14, Diao reportedly began to brandish a knife and scissors, prompting a police response. Diao, who did not speak English, by some accounts appeared to be on the verge of cutting his throat with the knife. Officers used a taser to prevent him from self-harm, but he seriously injured his face when he fell, a medical examiner’s report stated.

Diao died July 29 at Hennepin County Medical Center, from the effects of his injuries and pneumonia, according to local reports.

Joe Rodrigues, president of the National Association of State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Programs, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he has not heard of any similar cases.

However, in another recent incident, police reportedly used a taser and beanbag gun on a 95-year-old resident of an Illinois senior care facility. The man died, and the Illinois State Police are investigating, according to the Chicago Tribune.
