Win Marshall's three children installed him as the next chair of the board of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging in an induction ceremony that struck a personal note at the annual conference Monday.

"Thank you for changing lives, especially mine," said Marshall, who is vice president of finance and CFO of Christian Church Homes of Northern California. He is the first black chair of AAHSA.

Besides paying tribute to his children, John, Larajia and Jaevon, he also thanked various members of AAHSA who have mentored and supported him. It is with a "spirit of humility," he said, that he accepts the position of chair.

After his children recited the words to install him, seven AAHSA members spoke lines from "Man in the Mirror," a well-known Michael Jackson song. He alluded to the song throughout his speech. "I must look at the man in the mirror," he said.

Marshall called for more advocacy at the local, state and national level, and encouraged the expansion of advocacy "from the CNA to the CEO." He called on members to make 250,000 contacts or messages a year to legislators. He also said that AAHSA needs to enhance its social media presence through such outlets as Twitter and Facebook to connect with AAHSA members.
