The U.S. Department of Labor on Tuesday released a model outlining the core competencies required of workers in the long-term care industry.

The Long-Term Care, Supports and Services Competency Model has been in development for the past several months. It reflects the recommendations of experts from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living, among others. Competencies include basic computer skills, critical thinking and problem solving ability, a basic knowledge of math and science and the ability to practice within an ethical framework, according to the model.

The model is designed to evolve as skill sets required for long-term care change, according to government officials. To view the competency model, click here. A podcast describing the new model, as well as core competency issues in general, is available here.
