Stephen Carroll, COO Allcare Pharmacy

Thanks to McKesson’s Six Sigma team, Allcare Pharmacy was able to make several workflow and process improvements, says Allcare Pharmacy COO Stephen Carroll.

The Six Sigma team identified four areas for process improvement: pharmacy workflow, pharmacy systems, labor tracking and inventory management, Carroll says. One example of a positive change has been a way of directing specialized orders, such as split doses, to the technicians, who focused on those specific prescriptions.

McKesson began with Allcare Pharmacy on the implementation of Six Sigma in 2010, and Carroll says the implementation has paid off.

“We wanted to improve efficiency and accuracy,” he says. “Six Sigma confirmed some of the ideas we had and helped us make changes to improve. We were able to improve our workflow process.

“We’ve had a 20% increase in productivity,” Carroll says.
Six Sigma assists
McKesson’s Six Sigma team can assess a pharmacy floor plan and look at order processing from end-to-end. It can examine over-production and processing, along with transportation and waiting issues.
