To improve the coronavirus problem in nursing homes, federal policy must be proactive, not reactive, and supportive, not punitive. So say managing physicians in nursing facilities.
In “Solving the COVID-19 Crisis in Post-Acute and Long-Term Care,” a report from AMDA–The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine in this month’s issue of JAMDA, the physicians group offers four other keys to the puzzle. They are: including expertise from the long-term care and post-acute care sectors when relevant policy is being developed; collaboration across healthcare sectors; not relying on one-size-fits-all strategies; and reforming the nursing home industry and regularly process.
“The time for change must be now, while we are still in the terrible grip of this crisis, and before we sink back into the complacency of habits of our pre-COVID-19 lives,” report authors concluded.
