As expected, the House of Representatives repealed the Independent Payment Advisory Board Thursday afternoon.

Republicans opponents have said that the board, whose charge would be to control Medicare costs, would amount to a “rationing panel.” while Democrats against IPAB expressed concern that it would take away legislative control over the beneficiary program for seniors. But Republicans lost Democratic support when they added components such as medical malpractice reform.

While both sides of the Congressional aisle agree that Medicare costs need to be reined in, Republicans have urged that seniors receive a fixed payment that they can use for a private insurance or government health insurance program.

The IPAB repeal bill is expected to die in the Democratic-controlled Senate, or eventually face a White House veto.
