Nursing home care and facility use of antipsychotics are among the issues that could be discussed during a federal hearing slated for later this week.

The House Ways & Means Committee is set to hold a hearing on the “Caring for Aging Americans” 10 a.m. EST Thursday, Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) announced.

A press spokesperson for the committee told McKnight’s Long-Term Care News the hearing will likely cover “a range of issues, including home caregiving, hospice, nursing homes, the use of antipsychotics in nursing homes, and other matters related to long-term care for older Americans.” Inside Health Policy first reported on hearing’s agenda.

A representative for the American Health Care Association said Monday afternoon the organization was aware of the hearing and is currently trying to learn more specifics.

A spokeswoman for LeadingAge, meanwhile, added that the organization is planning on submitting testimony for the hearing.

The federal government is focused on providers who aren’t reducing antipsychotic use as quickly as it would like. Earlier this year, federal officials announced an effort to target skilled care facilities that are “later adopters” in reducing residents’ antipsychotic use rates.
