Hospitals now have access to the government's Web-based network for monitoring healthcare-associated infections.

The National Healthcare Safety Network allows hospitals to analyze the data and share it within a facility or with the public, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Eight states plan to use the system in implementing mandatory reporting of HAIS, the CDC said.

Nearly 1,000 hospitals are expected to use the network in coming months to track their progress toward HAI prevention.
