Growth of medical malpractice awards slows

The median malpractice jury award was $1.01 million in 2002, a small increase over the $1 million median of the previous two years, according to Jury Verdict Research. In 2002, plaintiffs won about 42% of malpractice lawsuits, compared with 40% in 2001.

Jury Verdict Research maintains a national database of more than 213,000 verdicts and settlements, according to a reporting Thursday in the Wall Street Journal.
 
Between 1996 and 2000, jury awards for increased from $473,000 to $1 million, the research firm said.
