Mitt Romney’s Republican presidential rivals are now pouncing on reports that Romney eliminated kosher meals for Jewish nursing homes in Massachusetts in 2003.

Campaigning in Florida on Monday, fellow candidate Newt Gingrich called out Romney — who was the governor of Massachusetts at the time — for vetoing a measure that would have designated $600,000 in state funds for kosher nursing home meals. Gingrich’s claim stems from a New York Post report that re-hashed the 2003 incident. Jewish nursing home operators told the Post that they were outraged at the time, saying that residents were entitled to continue their kosher practices.

Romney’s camp said the veto was needed to prevent deeper Medicaid cuts.
