An Ohio county is evaluating whether 20 beds at its nursing home could be dedicated for heroin addicts during their withdrawal, according to local reports.

The Butler County Care Facility in Hamilton’s plan would let non-violent addicts stay for three to seven days as they receive medication and counseling as they detox. It’s believed Medicaid would reimburse the county for services, and would help what the Cincinnati Enquirer described as the county’s “opiate epidemic.”

Two of the three county commissioners expressed concern over security. The county nursing home administrator is asking for an evening security guard and around $50,000 in upgrades to the building and security system. The county coroner also noted that the addicts would be heavily medicated and unlikely to be a threat.

Butler County is certified for 109 beds, and it has an overall above average ranking, according to Nursing Home Compare.
