A federal judge has blocked the “repugnant” Public Charge final rule, which would have allowed the government to base green card decisions on whether an immigrant could later be seen as a financial burden on taxpayers.

U.S. District Court Judge George B. Daniels issued a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the rule on Friday. The rule was set to go into effect today.

The rule faced pushback from several leading advocates after being announced.

LeadingAge opposed the rule in previously submitted comments. The National Council on Aging warned that the rule could force immigrant seniors to choose between long-term care services or losing their immigration status, and decimate the home care workforce.

Daniels called the rule “repugnant to the American Dream of the opportunity for prosperity and success through hard work and upward mobility,” Bloomberg Law reported

More than a dozen states, along with the District of Columbia, filed lawsuits challenging the rule.
