FBI agents raided a facility operated by California’s largest nursing home owner last week, reportedly searching for evidence of criminal activity.

The FBI took documents at the Alta Vista Healthcare & Wellness Centre in Riverside, CA, “seeking evidence in relation to alleged criminal activity,” an FBI spokeswoman told the Sacramento Bee. Authorities said no residents were removed from the facility or disturbed during the raid.

The 99-bed Alta Vista is owned by embattled nursing home owner Shlomo Rechnitz, who came under fire earlier this year after the Sacramento Bee published an investigation revealing lawsuits, regulatory fines and government investigations facing his company, Brius Healthcare Services. Brius owns roughly 1 in every 14 skilled nursing beds in the state of California.

In a statement to the Bee, Brius spokeswoman Sallie Hofmeister said the company is unaware of the basis of the FBI’s probe, which hasn’t been released since the search warrants are under seal. Hofmeister said the company is cooperating with authorities.

“We cannot comment on the specifics of the discussions with the authorities, but at this time we have no reason to believe the investigation has anything to do with patient care,” Hofmeister wrote. “Alta Vista is proud of the care and treatment it provides to its patients.”
