Police in Oklahoma said they busted two nursing home employees for prescription drug theft after stopping one of them in connection with an undercover gun buy and finding pilfered pill bottles in the car he was driving.
The man, Matthew Beason, 29, and his girlfriend, Torrie McCann, 22, both worked at the nursing home whose name was listed on the bottles, according to an arrest affidavit. Police said residents’ names were also included on containers holding morphine, zolpidem, clonazepam, oxycodone and hydrocodone.
In an interview with investigators quoted by the McAlester News-Capital, Beason said McCann put a morphine bottle by an outdoor shed where he could pick them up. He went inside the shed and found the other medications in a box there. The newspaper did not name the facility.
According to an affidavit, the director of nursing told police some of the pills were intended to be destroyed, while she thought others had previously been reported stolen.
Beason and McCann were each charged with one count of felony larceny of a controlled dangerous substance and one count of conspiracy to commit larceny of a controlled dangerous substance, according to court documents filed by the District Attorney’s office.
In Oklahoma, larceny of a controlled dangerous substance carries up to 10 years in prison. The conspiracy charge can lead to a sentence of seven years to life and a fine of more than $50,000.
