The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services instructed Medicare carriers and intermediaries to slow payment of legacy claims, which technically are not compliant with the HIPAA transactions standard but have been accepted since last fall under a contingency plan. It’s a move that the agency said it hopes will increase compliance.
CMS instructed the carriers and intermediaries, beginning July 1, to pay these claims no earlier than 27 days after receipt as opposed to the current 14.
CMS said the change is “a measured step toward ending the contingency plan completely.”
