New CMS chief stirs provider anticipation

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released the final version of the MDS 3.0 RAI Manual (version 1.17.1), which becomes effective in less than two weeks, Oct. 1.

The final RAI changes are the last big piece of guidance to skilled nursing operators before the onset of the Patient-Driven Payment Model — the biggest Medicare payment overhaul for at least a generation. The preliminary release of the manual was May 20.

New changes clarify which assessments swing-bed providers must complete, the definition of “interruption window” for interrupted Part A-covered stays, coding of Item I0200B, and changes regarding group therapy policies, and more.
