A healthcare provider wearing gloves vaccinates an older woman

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has posted two new videos on YouTube that explain its vaccine safety systems to residents and healthcare providers in long-term care.

A video on its Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, is geared toward certified nursing assistants and other facility providers. It explains how VAERS helps medical staff can report any concerning side effects in residents following COVID-19 vaccination, how to recognize some common side effects, and what should be reported.

Another video, geared toward residents, their families and healthcare providers, explains how to register with the CDC’s post-vaccination health checker, or v-safe. The system allows vaccinated individuals to notify the agency via smartphone about vaccine side effects. It also provides second vaccine dose reminders, if needed.  “Both you and your residents are encouraged to participate,” the agency encourages healthcare providers in a YouTube description.

More information about how to register and get started with v-safe is available on the CDC’s website, along with frequently asked questions about the program.
