Long-term care providers can refer to a newly launched website to access information and resources to prevent infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday.
The new CDC site offers information for clinical staff, infection control coordinators and residents. Topics include antibiotic stewardship, dialysis safety and hand hygiene. An estimated 1 to 3 million serious infections occur in LTC settings annually, the site notes.
Facilities can use the site to access the infection tracking system for long-term care facilities in the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network, as well as resources that the CDC developed in partnership with the Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes Campaign.
“The partnership between CDC and AE grew tremendously through our joint effort to develop and launch the infection goal to prevent C. difficile infections in nursing home residents,” wrote the CDC’s Nimalie Stone, M.D., in a blog post announcing the website.
The “cross-promotion” of Advancing Excellence infection control resources on the new website is intended to extend the reach of the AE campaign and provide additional tools to help participating facilities reach the campaign’s goals, wrote Stone. She is an epidemiologist with the CDC’s Division of Healthcare Promotion.
The CDC will continue to add content to the website, as the agency recognizes there “are many resources we still need to meet,” according to Stone.
