President Bush has nominated Kerry Weems, deputy chief of staff at the Department of Health and Human Services, to the position of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator.

Pending Senate confirmation, he would replace Acting Administrator Leslie Norwalk, who decided earlier to take her name out of the running for the permanent spot. She has served in her current role since Oct. 15, 2006, following the resignation of Mark McClellan.

Weems is a 24-year veteran of HHS. He has served as an advisor to several HHS secretaries and as a manager of large budgets and organizations, according to a statement by Michael Leavitt, secretary of HHS.
