Nursing homes in New South Wales, Australia, soon will have a new caregiving tool at their disposal for resident incontinence: electronic underpants.
The Smart Incontinence Management System (SIMsystem for short) uses an electronic moisture sensor to detect when a resident has had an accident, according to news reports from the so-called “land down under.” The sensor then alerts staff via either text message or paging system. According to Simavita, the company that makes SIMsystem, the sensors are compatible with disposable diapers, and can halve the time staff spends on incontinence management.
Simavita announced the rollout across New South Wales on Friday. The electronic underpants are already in use in the neighboring Australian state Victoria.
