Agencies chipping away at Medicare Part D premium glitch

Federal regulators say only 100,000 Medicare beneficiaries continue to experience technical problems paying their drug plan premiums through their monthly Social Security checks.

A glitch last month resulted in the government erroneously reimbursing 230,000 Medicare beneficiaries for their prescription drug benefit premiums. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administers the benefit and the Social Security Administration deducts some beneficiaries' premiums from Social Security checks.

"Every week, we get a significant number of these remaining ones resolved, and I expect these to continue to stay on track for resolution in the weeks ahead," said Mark McClellan, outgoing administrator of CMS.
