Organizers of National Senior Citizens Day say the event could provide a volunteer boom for providers. Individuals are called on each Aug. 21 to “support, honor and show appreciation to seniors,” including volunteering at retirement homes and long-term care facilities.

The day was created on Aug. 19, 1988, when President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5847. In part, it calls for people to recognize seniors for their achievements and contributions to their communities. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to offer seniors discounts and special observations.
