In what might qualify as news of the weird, nursing homes in New South Wales, Australia, soon will have a new caregiving tool at their disposal: electronic underpants. The Smart Incontinence Management System uses an electronic moisture sensor to detect when a resident has had an accident, according to several news reports. The sensor then alerts staff via either text message or paging system. According to Simavita, the company that makes SIMsystem, the sensors are compatible with disposable diapers, and can halve the time staff spends on incontinence management.
