In one of the area’s largest civil judgments awards in the past 20 years, aKentucky jury ordered the Lexington nursing home to pay $480,000 in the case of a nursing home resident who was mistreated.

A Davidson County-KY jury said Living Centers-Southeast Inc. was responsible
for the mistreatment and neglect of Emma H. King, who suffered from
Alzheimer’s. The 83-year-old King was admitted to the facility in 2002 for
care and rehabilitation following knee replacement surgery. While under the
care of the facility, she developed numerous pressure sores on her body which
eventually led her to lose the use of her legs.

King’s attorney blamed the injuries on lack of staffing and training. The
nursing home has a new name, Brian Center, and a new owner, Sava Senior
Care, which declined comment on the jury award, because the neglect occurred
during previous ownership, according to a spokesperson for the nursing home.
