The remainder is owned by government agencies, usually at the city or county level. About half of all freestanding SNFs — or two-thirds of all for-profit SNFs — are owned or operated by chains. Many of the largest chains also have significant non-nursing facility lines of business, including home health services, long-term acute care hospitals and assisted living facilities.
