A former nursing home certified nursing assistant has been arrested over allegations that he solicited men to sexually assault residents while he filmed them.

Authorities say Channing Butler, 26, tried paying men to come to Bickford Senior Living in Champaign, IL, to have sex with female memory care residents while he took photos and video. Butler worked at the facility last summer.

One of the men Butler solicited alerted authorities of his plans, which were later confirmed by emails found in Butler’s accounts. The assaults were attempted but never fully carried out, according to the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette.

The three targeted victims were aged 88, 90 and 95 at the time of the attempted assaults; the men Butler hired were 21, 22 and 24. Authorities haven’t said if they plan to charge any of the other men in the assaults.

Alan Fairbanks, executive vice president of Bickford Senior Living, told the News-Gazette that the the company has been cooperating with authorities and has alerted families of other residents to the situation. He declined to say whether Butler was still employed by the facility, or when he was hired.

The discovery of Butler’s planned assaults raised concerns at two additional facilities, the Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana, IL, and Autumn Fields Adult Community in Savoy, IL, where he had previously worked as a certified nursing assistant. No reports of sexual assaults by Butler have been discovered at either facility, Illinois Homepage reported.

As of press time Wednesday, Butler was expected to be charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse — a Class X felony in Illinois that carries a possible sentence of 6 to 30 years in prison.
