The projected supply of inactivated flu vaccine for next year’s flu season should be enough to cover those in high-risk groups, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

An estimated 40 million doses of the 61 million doses of influenza vaccine distributed this flu season went to people in priority groups, the CDC said last week. People age 65 and older are considered an at-risk population.

The 2010 national health target for vaccine coverage in non-institutionalized adults age 65 years or older is 90%. For other adults at high risk the coverage target is 60%.

This year, there was a severe shortage of flu vaccine early in the season as a result of contamination issues at flu maker Chiron. The CDC is advising customers to order vaccine in advance for next year for those at highest risk.
