Federal health regulators are strengthening labels on popular pain relievers, warning users about short-term risk for heart-related problems.

Currently, the warning labels for prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs advise against using long term because it can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, which can lead to death. However, the Food and Drug Administration warns that these problems can arise within just the first few weeks of taking the medication, and higher doses can magnify the risk even more.

While the updates are currently only for NSAIDs, the FDA stated it plans to make similar changes to over-the-counter drugs such as Advil and Motrin. Right now patients are warned to take the lowest dose possible for no more than 10 days.

These changes are based on the FDA’s recent review of studies, including outside recommendations. More FDA updates can be found here.
