Many hand sanitizer makers claim that their products prevent MRSA and other infections. Don’t believe them, the Food and Drug Administration is warning. In a recent letter, the FDA said such statements remain unproven. “FDA has not approved any products claiming to prevent infection from MRSA, E. coli, salmonella, or H1N1 flu,” said Deborah Autor, compliance director at FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. However, the agency added that people should continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation that hand sanitizers be used when water is unavailable.
