Think the government is overly choosy about which drugs it approves? Maybe you should think again.

Eleven Food and Drug Administration advisory committees recommended approval for 79% of prescription drugs and medical devices they considered during a seven-year period. The prescription drug advisory committee offered its approval 76% of the time, according to a new study by the National Research Center for Women & Families.

A total of 16 advisory committees convene to provide outside recommendations on applications for prescription drugs and medical devices to the FDA. The FDA is 10 times more likely to follow the recommendations of advisory committees when the committees recommend approval than when they recommend against approval, the study found.
