Nine in 10 providers encountered prescription drug shortages in the second half of 2010, according to a survey by Premier Healthcare Alliance. Fully 80% of respondents indicated that the shortages caused treatment delays or cancellations. Authors speculated that the drug shortages cost providers at least $200 annually. That’s because more expensive generic or therapeutic substitutes had to be purchased.
