Hospira’s Symbiq drug infusion pump could be accessed and controlled by hackers through a hospital’s wireless network, according to a report from Kalorama Information.
The Food and Drug Administration told healthcare users to stop using the Symbiq pump, which was to be phased out by the end of 2015. In 2011, a hacking demonstration was demonstrated on an insulin infusion pump; the healthcare industry is vulnerable to hacking, the investigators said.
“Significant adverse effects on the market as a whole are not anticipated as results of the recent FDA warning. The infusion pump market has maintained its trajectory of steady growth through several tumultuous years of recalls,” said Kalorama analyst Emil Salaza in a blog post.
The FDA has taken an increased role in the evaluation of infusion devices, including the development of software, Kalorama said.
