Police in New Castle, PA, are investigating an alleged double drug overdose of two residents at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center.

The residents, a man and a woman in their 60s, were both found unresponsive in different locations inside the 118-bed Edison Manor on Monday night. The woman had snorted heroin, according to a police report.

The incident follows drug-related criminal charges brought against a former licensed practical nurse who worked for the facility. Kathryn A. Jones, 52, overdosed on opiates while on duty last April and allegedly had stolen narcotics prescribed to residents, police said.

Jones no longer works for the company, according to the New Castle News. She was arraigned this week on charges of acquisition or obtaining possession of controlled substances by misrepresenting the labels, possession and possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, theft and recklessly endangering another person.

In this week’s case, both residents were revived with naloxone, the newspaper reported.

Gregory Nicoluzakis, an attorney for Saber Healthcare Group, Edison Manor’s owner, said in a statement that “the facility has in place response measures to protect (residents’) health, safety and welfare. In all instances, the facility has notified and worked with the appropriate governmental agencies.” He did not respond by production deadline to a request from McKnight’s for further comment.

In Lawrence County, where Edison Manor is located, the local coroner reported drug overdose deaths nearly tripled over the last four years.
