A New York nursing home accused of racial discrimination by employees agreed to a $900,000 settlement, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

In 2005, the EEOC filed a lawsuit on behalf of employees of the Flushing Manor Geriatric Center Inc., Queens, claiming the facility allowed some managers and residents there to utter racial slurs directed at Jamaican and Haitian workers. These workers also were prohibited from speaking their native language, while other non-English speaking groups could use their native languages, the lawsuit charged.

The settlement includes compensatory damages and back pay. It also requires the nursing home to provide anti-discrimination training for its employees and hire a human-resources professional to implement and oversee anti-bias policies.
