Survey: Facility satisfaction rises among LTC consumers

Half of all seniors cited deteriorating health as the number one reason they would leave their homes, while nearly one in four seniors said they would move due to a desire to live in seniors housing, according to a newly released Special Issue Brief from the American Seniors Housing Association.

Respondents had, on average, been in their homes for 24 years, with 74% reporting that they owned their homes free and clear. A majority of seniors – 61% – said that, barring any unforeseen health concerns, they planned to stay in their homes for more than 10 years. ASHA released its survey of senior homeowners late last week. Brooks Adams Research conducted the research through online and telephone surveys of 317 homeowners aged 75 and over.

Seniors generally have an advantage in the turbulent housing market because of substantial home equity and the lack of a mortgage, say report authors, though they note that the soft housing market is still an important factor in delaying the sale of a home. Authors suggest that seniors housing providers could enact programs to help prospective residents negotiate their home sales.
