As I prepared for this article, I realized that we don't hear much in the industry news outlets about suicide among our staff members. But that doesn't mean it isn't happening.
The good news is that the Affordable Care Act has much to offer people with mental illnesses. The bad news is that even with the law's policies, the U.S. health system is still woefully unprepared to meet the oncoming wave of mental health needs of baby boomers.
The state has an arguable right to ensure anyone accessing government-funded healthcare is properly screened and provided the right service, at the right price. But they should not be in the business of telling private citizens what they can or cannot do with their own money.
