The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently released its annual series of Medicare payment-related proposed rules for long-term care post-acute settings, which includes skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and long-term care hospitals last month.
The recent battle over the SGR passage with the Cardin Amendment brought forth glaring differences in outpatient therapy providers and their priorities. While I, along with the entire therapy world, dream of the day that the arbitrary therapy caps are repealed, the SGR “doc fix” bill simply was not the right time.
Healthcare is mandated to reduce spending. The problem is that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and others are so blinded by the “reduce spending” element that we have lost our ability to appreciate prevention.
