Some Medicare Part D beneficiaries now have until Feb. 15 to enroll in the drug program for 2007.

About 250,000 beneficiaries received an extension because they did not receive timely information about benefit and cost changes for their current Medicare prescription drug plans, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The deadline previously to enroll in or change drug plans was Dec. 31, 2006.

Other problems with the program persist. Some insurers said they have not received guidance from the government on how to calculate late-enrollment fees for beneficiaries. Medicare and the Social Security Administration still are working to resolve problems related to withholding premiums from beneficiaries’ Social Security checks.
