Nursing home staff members and residents will conduct special activities and events Sunday through May 20 in observance of National Nursing Home Week. The American Health Care Association established the week in 1967 to recognize the role skilled nursing centers play in caring for the elderly and disabled.

This year's theme is “The Spirit of America,” which alludes to bonds shared among staff and residents, AHCA officials said.

“National Nursing Home Week is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the important role nursing care providers have in improving the lives of those they care for every day,” said AHCA President and CEO Mark Parkinson.

Providers and members of the public can share their celebrations throughout the week on social media with the hashtag #NNHW.
