Warfarin and the newer direct oral anticoagulants are used to treat blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and to prevent stroke in people who have atrial fibrillation. Understanding the comparison, use and safety of anticoagulants is important for healthcare providers in long term care facilities. Warfarin is a drug most commonly identified with adverse drug interactions, in fact, warfarin tops the list of “Top 10 Drug Interactions” in long-term care.
During this webinar, we’ll evaluate the use of warfarin and other direct oral anticoagulants, dosing recommendations and new guidance on the use of anticoagulants, as well as risks associated with use.
Learning objectives:
- Evaluate the proper use of oral anticoagulants (e.g., dosing, monitoring, administration)
- Recognize signs and symptoms of, and risk factors for, bleeding
- Clinical considerations when selecting anticoagulant therapy, assessing the benefit-to-risk ratio
