The Service Employees International Union is protesting the acquisition of nursing home chain Manor Care Inc. by the Carlyle Group. It fears the $6.3 billion buyout will lead to layoffs and cuts in benefits for employees.About 150 members of the union demonstrated outside the Carlyle Group’s District headquarters this week. They carried a banner reading “Put America’s Seniors Above Carlyle Profits.”

Carlyle, which is one of the biggest private-equity firms in the world, plans to buy the largest nursing home chain in the country. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter. The SEIU organizes long-term care workers.
