A 96-year-old survivor of the infamous Titanic ship is selling memorabilia from the trip to pay her nursing home bills.

Millvina Dean, who is reportedly the last living survivor of the ill-fated ocean liner, was expected to put up for auction Saturday rare images of the Titanic. She also sold letters to her mother from the Titanic Relief Fund promising compensation in the form of a one pound, seven shillings and sixpence per week stipend. A suitcase full of clothes donated to her family by the people of New York was also up for sale. Though Dean was only two months old at the time the Titanic sank in 1912, she has held on to these items for the last 96 years.

Dean’s family was on the way to Kansas City, MO, when the ship carrying them hit an iceberg and sank. After their rescue, Dean, her mother and her older brother returned to England. Her father did not survive the wreck. Two years ago, Dean fell, breaking her hip, and has been unable to return to her home. She hopes that selling some of these valuable items will help her to continue to afford care in a nursing home in South Hampton—Titanic’s home port.
