One of the perks of working in this field is that there is no shortage of people or agencies willing to tell you exactly what to do.

As you've probably discovered, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services can get rather specific about the ways it would like things done. The same can be said for most state agencies. And chances are quite good that your boss or board is also more than willing to spell out expectations.

Unfortunately, life does not come with such detailed guidance. But fear not: Others much smarter than we are have been kind enough to pass along their suggestions and observations. Here a dozen quotes that I have found useful, or at least mildly humorous:

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment. — Barry LePatner

You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take. — Wayne Gretzky

To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail. — Abraham Maslow

I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have. — Thomas Jefferson

Eighty percent of success is showing up. — Woody Allen

If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right. — Henry Ford

The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat. — Lily Tomlin

Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate. —  Thomas Jones

The best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it. — Harry Truman

Sometimes you're the windshield; sometimes you're the bug. — Mark Knopfler

Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much. — Oscar Wilde

Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others. — Groucho Marx
