The American Health Information Management Association found that most healthcare organizations are largely HIPAA compliant.

AHIMA surveyed 1,192 healthcare professionals in February, 7% of which were long-term care organizations. Nearly 68% of the overall respondents said their facilities were 85% to 99% compliant with the rule, while 23% said their organization was fully compliant.

The survey also identified continuing compliance challenges, but noted that long-term care facilities have special circumstances, compared with hospitals.

“Facilities like nursing homes, behavioral health, and long-term care facilities note different issues because they interact more with patients’ families than hospitals, clinics, physician offices, or health plans do,” the survey said.
