The presidential race is over and the winner has been announced. But it’s not Obama or McCain who emerged triumphant. Rather, Andy Stern has been re-elected as president of the Service Employees International Union, the nation’s largest healthcare organization.

Most delegates backed Stern and his “Justice For All” strategy, during a convention in San Juan last week. The plan seeks to increase membership by promoting immigrant citizenship and launching more aggressive campaigns to organize labor. With more than 2 million members, SEIU is the nation’s fastest-growing union.

Stern said he plans to pressure politicians to make health insurance more affordable and to keep promises they make to unions. He added that he expects to add half a million new members in the next four years.
