California is planning not to enforce a federal law that requires illegal immigrants seeking Medicaid to show proof of citizenship.
The law, which is scheduled to take effect July 1, would require Medicaid enrollees to show identification such as a birth certificate or passport to receive services.
About 650,000 of 7 million Medi-Cal recipients in California lack such documentation even though they are legitimately enrolled, according to a not-for-profit group. The Department of Health and Human Services is planning to release guidelines related to the federal law.
