Seven months after Hurricane Katrina, only one nursing home in New Orleans has faced disciplinary action for its conduct related to the storm, according to a news report.

The Department of Health and Hospitals revoked Ferncrest Manor Living Center’s operating license on Dec. 23 for “substantial noncompliance with state standards.” A day before Katrina hit land, three elderly residents who were evacuated from the facility on school buses died. The state inspection report found that two buses did not have certified nurses aboard, as required by the facility’s evacuation plan. The facility is one of five still under investigation, according to officials

Meanwhile, no charges have been filed yet against the owners of St. Rita’s Nursing Home in Bernard Parish where 34 residents died in flooding following the storm, according to a report in the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper.

Only 14 or 27 nursing homes in New Orleans had reopened as of late February following Hurricane Katrina, the report notes. To open, they must pass a state inspection.
