Healthpoint Biotherapeutics has tested a unique wound care treatment: spray-on skin. The product was recently tested on 228 patients with leg ulcers, with encouraging results. The spray consists of donated skin cells (keratinocytes) and an anti-clotting agent (fibroblasts). The two substances are believed to work together to quicken healing and stimulate the body’s production of new skin. Currently, compression bandages are used to treat most leg wounds. But even the product’s most optimistic supporters admit that federal approval for the product may still be several years away.
