Skilled care facilities officially tabbed “alternate care sites” may not be able to take on hospital patient overflow during disasters, according to a report that examines hospital disaster planning.
Emory University researchers analyzed SNF and hospital admission and discharge data from Hurricane Katrina and the Midwest floods of 2008. Skilled nursing facility discharge rates declined these events, the study authors determined by looking at Medicare data. They found hospitals discharged more people to other hospitals but not to SNFs.
