Six New York nursing home workers have been arrested for allegedly stealing personal information, money and jewelry from residents in their facilities, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced.

Five of the six thefts occurred in facilities in New York City. They included alleged thefts of personal information from residents that was used to withdraw cash or use credit. The thefts range in value from $1,700 to $11,000, with some of the funds being spent on luxury items such as electronics or handbags, authorities said.

The sixth employee who was charged Tuesday worked in Suffolk County on Long Island. He allegedly stole a necklace from a 95-year-old resident. Later, he returned the jewelry, telling another employee he had found it on the floor.

“My office will not tolerate this type of financial exploitation, and we will remain vigilant in ensuring that nursing home resident’s personal and financial information is protected,” Schneiderman said in his announcement.

The charges filed against the six workers include identity theft, grand larceny, falsifying business records, and endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person.
